This is an original design I made for our very own Emily Blattel’s baby shower. Her theme was German fairytales. The children and cottage designs were hand painted onto fondant and then attached to the cake. The trees on the top tier were hand painted directly onto the cake. Hand painting is such a fun, yet time consuming thing. A couple times I dreamed of buying an edible image printer, but then I couldn’t say I personally painted every detail. So there is some satisfaction in that. 🙂
The bottom tier is made to resemble a birch tree. Any kind of tree cake is probably one of my favorite style of cakes to make.
Close-up of the hand painted cottage. I attached the cottage and then added fondant greenery to make it really stand out.
Emily’s sister, Elizabeth, styled the whole baby shower. Her company is Liz Richter Art and based out of Louisville, KY. Liz sent me her ideas and photos of the German Hansel & Gretel art that inspired the cake. My main inspiration for the cake was based off of art by Kay Nielsen. I really loved her image of the cottage surrounded by the trees.
The best compliment was when guests showed up to the shower and asked where the cake was. The cake blended in so well with Liz’s decor that no one even realized it was cake!
